When you start talking about bathroom soaking tubs, you're looking at a huge range of products. Tubs are made of different materials and come in all kinds of sizes, colors and shapes. How do you begin to make heads or tails of it?
You can start by deciding whether you want a free standing tub or one that's built-in with a surround. When you've decided that, you can start looking at the style of tub that you want. Common styles in a built in tub will be a corner soaking tub (great if you have limited space), a small deep tub, a walk-in tub, or a Japanese soaking tub. In free standing tubs, you can choose from claw foot or pedestal designs, slipper back or double slipper back, or traditional Japanese ofuros. All of these tubs can be fitted with air or water jets.
Another choice that you'll have to make is what type of material you want your tub to be made of. This will hinge, to a degree, on the style of tub that you choose. For example, let's look at acrylic and cast iron. You can get a claw foot stand alone tub made of either fiberglass reinforced acrylic or cast iron. If you decide on a corner soaking tub, your only real option will be acrylic. Finding that you're limited to acrylic isn't necessarily bad. Acrylic tubs, like fiberglass ones, are made in a mold. Molding a tub makes it possible to include several built in features that many people find beneficial. These would include things like arm rests, seats, head rests and lumbar support. All of these features can make your bathing experience more enjoyable.
What other materials are soaking tubs made from? Most commonly, aside from acrylic and cast iron, you'll find tubs made of enamel over steel, wood, and fiberglass. When deciding which material is right for you, besides shape, consider the amount of use that the tub will get and how much time you'll be able to spend on its maintenance. By far, the easiest to maintain material will be acrylic. About all it takes to maintain it is to periodically clean it. It's a non-porous material so it won't stain like some other materials do and it won't fade since the color goes throughout the material. Enamel is a classic look but it can chip. Wood has a great appearance but a shorter life span than tubs made of other materials
Regardless of the type that you choose, one of today's bathroom soaking tubs is a great addition to any home.
