Use Common Sense While Doing Repairs Yourself

Fixing many things around your house by yourself covers the correction, alteration or repair of anything without the help of experts or professionals. For example repair appliances include diagnosing the problem and then fixing it by yourself. Many types of repair projects though could be very complicated or risky and will require qualified handyman or professionals, but very often it is not necessarily so.

I have a friend who actually can fix almost everything. I have been watching him for years and basically have learned his technique. The major part of his technique is to understand of how broken thing should work properly and what went wrong. Then he decides how that thing could be fixed if it could be fixed.

I have never done much at home because my motto was: do your job at what you are good at and pay professionals to do their jobs. Now when I have a lot of free time on my hands (I have retired). I have decided to try and fix a couple of things on my own by using my buddy's technique. So by using his technique I have tried to fix a couple of things by myself. It went very well. I fixed broken sliding door in my bathroom just by simply figuring out why it is not sliding. First I have figured out why it is not working properly. When I understood why I went to "Lowe's" to buy new bearings and new rail. Then I replaced the old once and it worked. My wife was very surprised and I was very proud of myself. My next project was replacing old thermostat, which did not maintain right temperature, with the new one. It has also worked so I was becoming to be a handyman (just joking).

My biggest project so far was fixing a leaking Whirlpool Refrigerator. I found instructions of how to do that and followed it step by step. Now refrigerator is not leaking. I probably saved a couple hundred bucks. It does not mean that I could do everything my friend can but at least now I have a lot of project to keep myself busy plus saving a few bucks from my budget.

Now as a "great expert" I have tried to summarize my amateur experience... but basically repeating what my friend have told me.

It is useful to estimate the limits on the amount of time and money to invest before deciding to go on a repair project. If your estimation happened to be wrong you will never complete the project. You must clearly identify the tasks of resolving the problem, finding the materials, supplies, tools and skills necessary to perform an adequate repair.

Other example such as some home improvement could result in a higher repair costs and you should consider substitution instead of improvements. It can make much sense to upgrade or replace some home system rather then repair dying one.

Some things, like broken windows, appliances and furniture can be taken to the workshops, but repairs can be done very easily by you, such as patching holes with plaster and drywall, cleaning stains, repairing cracked windows and their screens, or replacing broken electrical switches or sockets.

Other remedies may be urgent, such as broken water pipes, broken doors, locks and windows, or leaky roof or water tank. This factor can certainly justify the call for professional help. Handyman in the family becomes adept to deal with such immediate repairs and avoid damage or loss until the professional help will arrive.

Kitchen considered the most important part of the house. With a few hundred dollars many things could be replaced like the kitchen faucet, cabinet doors and door's handles, lighting fixtures with brighter, more energy efficient once. With a little more money you can replace cabinets themselves or just refinish doors and drawers. You can order your replacement doors from many retailers and install it manually.

Beside the kitchen, bathrooms are the most troubled room of the house. A lot of thing could go wrong in the bathroom: sliding door could stop sliding, toilet seat needs replacement, drainage problems, bathtub needs re-grouting etc. These things can still be cheaper to do by yourself rather than pay for professional help.

The list of things you can fix or replace yourself could go on and on but it requires desire, time and some skills.

The periodic maintenance like inspections, adjustments, cleaning or replacement should be done regularly to ensure the proper functioning of all systems in a house to avoid costly emergencies.

Be brave start saving money and have a lot of fun on a top of it

Small Bathroom Decorating Ideas (Do) Install Crown Molding

One room in the house that never seems to be quite big enough, is the bathroom. Unless you are one of the lucky ones, your bathroom is probably the average size which probably looks even smaller with all of the junk that finds it way behind the door. Besides a little organization, there are some decorating steps you can take to make the look and feel of your small bathroom a little less crowded.

Using soft cool colors such as a pink, blue, green, lavender or a cream pastel shade will give the illusion of more space at the same time as creating a feeling of serenity. Too add a little splash for highlights you can add bold colors for accessories such as towels, shower curtain, rug, and toilet seat cover. Lighting does wonders for opening up the look of your bathroom. You can install a recessed can lighting into your ceiling to focus on any work space. Wall sconces or a counter top lamp can add some warmth to your small bathroom. If you have the right design and budget, you can even put in a skylight, larger windows or Solar tubes to add even more depth to your room.

Take a look around and evaluate your space. Do you really need that large vanity? How about replacing it with a pedestal or wall mounted sink to free up some much needed floor space. If you find you need to store some supplies, try tacking up a small shelf on the wall over the toilet or rearranging a nearby linen closet. Another tip you could use to make a small bathroom appear larger, is if it is possible to replace a shower door with a shower curtain. If your shower design does not support this type of change, try trading a frosted glass shower door for a clear glass one to provide more depth to the room.

Eliminate all clutter or un-necessary items. Often we do not realize just how much stuff we collect until we realize we can no longer see the counter top underneath. Try having only a select number of towels on display, use only one floor rug, do not over do it with artwork on the walls, use only one decorative accessory instead of many small items. If you have dark flooring, try replacing it with white or light colored tiles. You can find tiles that are easy to lay down and are affordable at places such as Wal-mart, a home depot, a liquidators, or often even a discount store. If it is not possible to replace your flooring, use a large light colored rug placed in front of the shower or tub.

When choosing art pieces to accent your small bathroom, choose large paintings of outdoors like a garden picture or a meadow. This will add an extra dimension to the room. Another cheap home decorating ideas is painting a lattice or molding design around the edge of your small bathroom ceiling will also give the illusion of a raised ceiling. You can even install crown molding that has a place for shadow lighting which will add warmth to any small room. Adding architectural detail to any size room is adding beauty

Learn how to install crown molding yourself and save money. There are how to guides and videos to teach you how.You can even use leftover trim molding to frame out a large mirror which will reflect light and open up your small room. All of these ideas are simple, affordable and easy to apply for almost everyone. With some organization, and a little creativity, you can have your small bathroom looking twice as spacious.

The Correct Way to Clean Your Bathroom

Did you know the bathroom is supposed to be the cleanest room in the house? But let's be honest. This task is always delegated to someone and there is always a little complaining from somebody. Its ok I feel your pain. But it needs to be done. So where do you start?

You need the proper tools in order for you to take care of your bathroom. Using a bucket to hold your cleaning supplies should keep them all together when it comes time to clean. That way you don't have to hunt for them. Soap scum remover, toilet bowl cleaner, bathroom disinfectant, window/glass cleaner, toilet scrub brush, and a sponge pad is all you need.

Start with the shower, using both the soap cup and the bathroom disinfectant. Spray the walls, knobs and curtain with spray, then with lukewarm water; wipe down the dirt and soap. Run the hot water in the tub or shower as this also helps spray down the walls and tops of shower curtains.

Then the toilet is next. Use the spray from the toilet bowl cleaner, spray clockwise and underneath the lip of the toilet while spraying just a little extra into the middle of the toilet. Scrub this thoroughly and let it sit so that the toilet bowl soaks up the disinfectant cleaner. Then Spray with bathroom cleaner the rest of the toilet, hitting the seat, underneath the seat, the rim of the toilet as well as the hinges where the seat and toilet meet. Wipe down with your sponge with the water from the sink. This should be quick and should take no more than 5 minutes. Flush your toilet to get rid of the toilet bowl cleaner and don't forget to wipe the bases of the toilet, where grime and dirt can attach to the toilet.

Clean the mirrors with the glass cleaner and wipe down with either a paper towel or even a newspaper! Yes the newspaper doesn't promote streaking and keeps glass or mirrors looking clean!

The last thing to worry about is the sink. If you had used the sink for the water in any of these tasks to wipe down, it only seems logical that this task would be the last one on your bathroom list. Use the cleaner or spray to spray down the entire sink. With the sponge and hot water running, wipe down the sink. (Include the base if there is one) Finish by spraying the glass cleaner on the metal fixtures if it applies to you. Wipe down for a shiny finish to your bathroom fixture. All that is left is to mop.

Attic Pull Down Stairs Must Be Installed Correctly to Be Safe

Attic access is made easier by installing a set of attic pull down stairs. The stairs are usually made of wood and fold so they can be stored in the attic access opening. The stairs are often installed by non- professionals and have safety problems. It is imperative that the attic pull down stairs are installed correctly to avoid injury.

Defects and problems are often observed in attic pull down stair installation. One of the common installation defects is that structural members like trusses or floor joists are cut in order to accommodate the stairs. The structural members of the attic flooring should not be removed, notched or cut without proper reinforcements installed. Most attic stairs are designed to fit in between floor joists however when the floor joists need to be cut, professional evaluation should be made to reinforce the floor structure.

Often the hardware, screws and nuts that secure the stair hinges are missing or loose. All fasteners should be installed and they all should be tight in order to avoid hazards. Missing bolts or nuts should be replaced in order to avoid serious injury.

Attic ladders are often cut too short so the bottom of the set of stairs is hanging down not touching the floor. This condition is unsafe and can lead to serious injury. The bottom of the steps should land solidly on the floor in order to avoid putting excess stress at the attachments at the top of the stairs. If the stairs are too long the hinges will bend downward and place too much pressure on the stair hinges. Attic stairs should be cut so that the hinges do not bend and the bottom of the set of steps lay flush on the floor. If the hinges bend downward they can break as you travel up the steps and cause injury.

Attic steps should be secured with the required number of screws. Often too few fasteners are used to secure the attic pull down stairs in the attic access. Check with the manufactures of the stairs and install the required number of screws in the proper locations in order to solidly secure the steps to the hatch frame.

Other problems occur with the springs and the spring arm assemblies. Often the springs slip off the spring guides and this causes the spring arms to bend backwards making it impossible to close the steps without using your hand to pull the arm back in position. Make sure that the springs sit properly in the spring guides.

When a set of attic pull down steps are installed in the garage ceiling to the garage attic, additional measures must be taken to restore the fire rating of the garage ceiling. Install gypsum board over the attic pull down stair hatch so the gypsum board covers the hatch when the stairs are in the closed position. This will restore the fire rating of the attic access hatch.

Heat loss can also occur from the attic access hatch opening. Cold air from the attic will enter the home and increase utility bills. Install an attic access hatch cover that sits firmly above the stairs in the opening in order to properly insulate and seal the area and avoid heat loss.

Attic pull down stairs allow for easy access to your attic space. As with any ladder system the set of pull down stairs require regular inspection and some maintenance in order to keep them functioning safely.
